A sturdy mouse..
but may not the best wheel for scrolling due to this size of the mouse compared with the friction of the wheel. The mouse has a moulded rubber feel and is the sturdyist mouse suited to laptops i have come across. This mouse can take the biggest of knocks and still come back squeaking. Tried and tested with windows XP home Edition this mouse has proved faultless.

Nice mouse but poor driver - not supported by Intellipoint
-
5 stars for the mouse, 0 stars for the software (there isnt any!).

Nice chunky little mouse, good looking, smooth action and positive click to all the buttons. Cable short and thin, which is good.

This is a USB only mouse, it will not work with a PS/2 adapter. Because there is no driver or software with the mouse, it is recognised as a "HID compliant" USB mouse in Win 2000 and XP. The standard Control Panel mouse settings do not even show the mouse wheel! (although it appears to work anyway in most applications)

Another problem is the latest Microsoft Intellipoint (5.0) is not packaged with the mouse and does not support it. If you download Intellipoint from the MS website and install it, you have to choose another similar model if you want to change button assignments. Only the most basic functions are available and the USB driver does not give the option to "force" recognition of the mouse wheel (unlike a standard PS/2 mouse driver which does).

Even if you manage to set up the wheel and buttons in intellipoint by fooling it into thinking you have another model, some applications do not recognise the presence of the mouse wheel. For instance I can scroll up and down in Word, Excel and IE but not in lotus notes or in a couple of other applications. VERY annoying! A standard PS/2 Microsoft wheel mouse on the same machine (Thinkpad X31 via port replicator) works fine in all applications.

MS Optical Notebook Mouse
This little beauty rolls in with a short USB cable (a couple of inches over 2ft long) and a sleek rubberised body for extra grip.

The Special Edition black model looks expensive (which it isnt if you compare like with like) but you are getting a quality robust product for the price, with fittings and lines as well built and spaced apart as a BMW motor car. The red scroll wheel and the red side grips light up when the mouse is operational, looking fantastic against the dark black moulded body.

The mouse is small, but not uncomfortably so because the width is wide enough to accomodate a grip you would associate with a full-sized device. It looks like it was not just designed for portability, but for small hands as well - and unless you are one who rests the small of your palm on your mouse, you will find the feel of this mouse very similar to the full-sized affair.

Some people may find the cable too short (it will be if you try to use it with a desktop) but for my notebook where the USB connector is at the back of the machine, it is more than adequate with plenty of slack and better in my experience than having a cumbersome long cable in tow.

Precision on a number of differing surfaces is excellent on this mouse (as you would expect from an optical device) and the quality of the scrool wheel and buttons feel positive and accurate. In all, it is what it says it is and it does its job very well. Plus it looks fabulous to boot!
